Meta Keywords - Whats the Deal?
Over the years, the use of the META Keywords tag has gone from very important to seemingly not important at all. This is due to the abuse of the tag by Black Hat SEO morons. While most search engines give no weight to your page based on your KW meta, they do in fact use it as a guide in choosing which keyword your page is about. In search engine optimization, there is a concept known as a "Clear Winner." One keyword should be used significantly more than any other on the page. I've found roughly 40-50% more to be a good rule of thumb. But what if you want to use a 3 or more word keyword? By nature, your would then have two 2-word keywords that would show up equally to your 3-word keyword. How could you have a clear winner? That is where your meta keyword tag comes in. In almost all instances, I will use only one keyword in my KW meta tag. By doing so, you are giving the search engine information to work with. If you put a 3-word keyword into your keyword meta, then the search engine will 1. Check the density for that KW Phrase, and 2. See if that KW Phrase is a clear winner amongst other 3-word phrases. Proper use of your keyword meta tag will identify what word or phrase you want to be the focus of that page, and will weigh your page accordingly. I have done this for dozens of sites, with excellent results across the board. So, while the keyword meta in and of itself doesn't give you a bump, it's proper use can absolutely help the overall score of your page. |
